Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Detoxification?

Detoxification (detox) is the process through which drugs and alcohol leave the body after intake of these substances comes to an end. This process forms the essential first step on the path to sobriety and a long-term, substance-free lifestyle.

Why Can’t I Detox on My Own?

Without proper medical supervision, detoxification is risky for several reasons, including increased odds for detox complications, relapses and overdoses. Enrollment in a detox program helps minimize these risks and ensure positive outcomes.

What Is Medically Supervised Detox?

In medically supervised detox, the detoxification process is overseen by medical professionals who know how to reduce the risks for serious problems and increase the odds of treatment success. The core elements of this safer approach include:

  • 24/7 monitoring and support of physical health
  • Use of as-needed medications to ease the symptoms of substance withdrawal
  • Emotional/psychological support in the form of counseling or therapy

Addiction specialists and public health officials agree that medically supervised programs produce far superior results when compared to other alternatives.

What Happens When I Complete Detox?

Detoxification is a crucial first phase in recovery from drug or alcohol addiction. However, to receive lasting benefits and develop the skills needed to avoid returning to substance use in the future, you must follow up detox participation with enrollment in an inpatient or outpatient treatment program. During your stay, we will help you prepare for this next step in recovery and when you complete detox, we’ll help you make the transition to your new program.
