Those in addiction recovery struggle a lot with this as they must put themselves in tempting social situations to be with their friends.
  • Relationships: Dating the wrong person can also put you in a dangerous position. You must be very careful about who you date if you have a history of addiction. After all, whoever you spend a lot of time with can and will influence your behavior. If your partner wants to experiment with drugs and alcohol, the chances are that you’ll be swayed into it too.
  • Being somewhere that reminds you of your past: In the same way, a recovering alcoholic shouldn’t walk into a bar, anyone in recovery should avoid places that trigger their memory of drug abuse. You might have had a favorite place where you and your friends engaged in drug use – the park, the beach, a friend’s house, and so forth. Don’t go anywhere that will potentially re-trigger your addiction.

Mental and Emotional

Unfortunately, many common addiction triggers are entirely unavoidable. You’ll undoubtedly experience hardships in your life and face greater temptations more than ever before. You must learn to deal with these turbulent emotions instead of turning back to your old vice. Some mental and emotional triggers include:

  • HALT (hungry, angry, lonely, tired): These universal emotions often play into addictions since people often turn to their vices to find relief. Someone who is going through a tough time might turn to drugs to make themselves feel better. That’s where the stereotype of the depressed man binge-drinking alcohol comes from – people engage in such behaviors to uplift themselves during difficult times.
  • Physical or mental illness: Both physical and mental illness play a significant role in overcoming addiction. People who suffer from such illnesses often turn to drugs for relief. Opioids produce a brief “euphoric” effect, which entices the user to take more dosages. Consider the opioid abuse statistics that about 12% of opioid users become addicts and that 30% of opiate addicts abuse pain relievers. What’s even scarier is that 80% of heroin users started their addiction to opioids.
  • Over-confidence: It’s quite easy for someone to think that one short drug usage is no big deal. These small allowances are called “slips.” They occur when a former drug user engages in a small one-time vice. For example, a recovering alcoholic might have one sip of wine and continue their sobriety. The problem is that these slips can turn into full relapses. Many people over-estimate their self-control and under-estimate the drug’s influence.
  • Reminiscing about past experiences: Drugs might be dangerous, but people have a lot of fun using them. Many people suffering from addiction might get misty-eyed when reminiscing about how much fun they used to have with drugs and alcohol. Their current life likely seems dull in comparison. Unfortunately, this style of thinking is one of the most common addiction triggers. Many people will do almost anything to re-live their “good old days,” even if it means sacrificing their future health and security.
